Lemna minor

Duckweed

Commonly called Duckweed, Lemna is known as the worlds smallest flowering plant. It is a small floating plant with a few short roots dangling in the water column. Lemna multiplies quickly and has the ability to cover a small pond in one season. Depending on the use of the pond this may appear to not be visually appealing, however if one was to brush aside the duckweed by hand they would find very clear algae free water much cooler even in the hottest of summer days. Lemna is a favorite food of fish and when growing in a dense mat prohibits mosquitoes from laying eggs. Not for every pond but an important plant for natural habitats.
