Vaccinium macrocarpon - Cranberry

Carnivorous Companions

Vaccinium macrocarpon

Cranberry

Vaccinium macrocarpum, American cranberry. The cranberry is a Native American wetland fruit.  Nodding flowers resemble shooting stars, white to pink, mid-June - mid-July followed by ripening of yellow-green fruit to bright red in fall.  The vines thrive in wetland soils. Wetlands store and purify water and help to maintain the water table.  Evergreen mats form by sending up erect branches  up to 1' trailing stems. Small glossy dark green leaves in summer turn a variety of fall colors.  Creeping rhizomes.  Great companion planting to Sarracenia.  Attracts birds and bees!
