- Standout specimen planting
Iris ensata ‘Variegata’, Variegated Japanese iris, have been treasured in Japan for centuries. Variegated Japanese Iris forms narrow sword-like green and white foliage reaching 2-3' tall growing from thick slow creeping rhizomes. The elegant flowers 3-4" across are purple and bloom in the spring just slightly taller than the sword-like foliage. They require neutral to acidic soil, and lots of moisture until blooming time is over. Great as a cut flower, but this variegated form has flowers that are closer to the wild forms so it is the white and green foliage which remains beautiful throughout the growing season.
